When does the stock market open and when does the stock market closes ?

When does the stock market open? This may seem like a small question, but it is a lot more complicated then it appears.

When does the stock market open and when does the stock market closes? The stock market opens and closes based on a schedule and holidays. The stock market will open or closes on a scheduled basis and it is not the same for all assets. Different instruments have different closing and opening hours, depending on the asset class and stock exchange on which they are traded, some contracts expiring on certain dates. Some market events influence the opening and closing times of some stock exchanges.

Closing times for stock market exchanges vary so this is why we have to divide each market with it’s own operating time. The stock markets generally close in the evenings except on holidays in some exceptions.

Trading generally starts Monday and goes on up until to Friday on each week. In some cases a few stock exchanges temporarily close during their normal operating hours to allow for a lunch break. This is most commonly seen in Asia’s marketplaces, although the London Stock Exchange does also break for lunch also but only for 2 minutes.

There are some exceptions for the US market hours and those are the mandatory holidays when the market hours are different then the rest of the year. Below there are some examples:

The Japanese stock market

Japanese stock exchanges close an hour or two before European stock exchanges begin their trading day.

The European stock market

Most European stock exchanges start their trading program on the stock segment at 10:00 GMT+2, usually with a half-hour pre-opening session in which brokers can place orders but cannot actually trade.

However, the duration of the trading session differs greatly from country to country, this being usually proportional to the volumes traded. More from our team on our Social Page. Go back to out Home page for more articles.
